Baseball has Four Named to All-BIG EAST Teams

May 25, 2016

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team had four members selected to all-conference teams, when the BIG EAST Conference announced its postseason awards on Wednesday morning. Junior right-handed pitcher Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while senior right-hander Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley), sophomore outfielder Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and junior Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) all earned spots on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. The all-conference teams were selected by the league's head coaches. The four All-BIG EAST selections tie the program record set in 2015.

Mathews had a stellar second year on the Hilltop, moving into the starting rotation and making 13 starts for the Hoyas. At the end of the regular season, the junior righty had fired a BIG EAST-high 95.1 innings, throwing five complete games, and ranked third in the conference with a 2.45 ERA. He finished with a 5-4 record, tying for the team lead in wins, and ranked second on the GU pitching staff with 59 strikeouts. His five complete games were the most by a Georgetown pitcher since Pat Salvitti had five in 2003 and his 95.1 innings pitched are tied for the third most in a Georgetown single-season history. The three-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Mathews tied a career high twice with nine strikeouts in wins over Penn and Xavier and threw three-straight complete games, April 16-30, picking up wins over Xavier, Butler and Seton Hall. He did not allow an earned run for a stretch of 22.1-consecutive innings including a 1-0, complete-game shutout over Seton Hall.

Smith, an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2015, started 13 games for the Blue & Gray during his senior campaign, finishing with a 3-6 record and a 4.52 ERA while recording a team-high 64 strikeouts in 81.2 innings pitched. His 64 strikeouts rank eighth in Georgetown's single-season history. Smith went 2-0 during GU's spring break trip to Florida, with wins over then-No. 15 Florida Atlantic and Penn, and also picked up a victory over St. John's. Over his final two starts, Smith broke three Georgetown career pitching records. In his start at Creighton on May 6, he passed Tom Bass ('83) for innings pitched and now holds the top spot with 309.2 career frames. When he took the mound in his final start against Villanova on May 13, Smith surpassed Tim Adleman ('10) and Eddie Pena ('05) with his 49th career start. In his final game, he also passed Adleman for the career strikeout lead, finishing his career with 229 strikeouts.

DeRenzi was a mainstay in the Georgetown lineup, starting 48 games in right field and leading the Hoyas in several offensive categories, including a .332 batting average, 68 hits, five triples, 94 total bases and 26 stolen bases. He ranked third in the BIG EAST in batting average and hits, tied for second with five triples, was fourth in total bases and fifth in stolen bases. His 26 stolen bases were the most by a GU player since Rand Ravnaas ('12) had 26 thefts in 2011. DeRenzi also tied for second on the team with three home runs and tied for fifth with 21 RBI. Twice named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, DeRenzi set the Georgetown single-game record with six hits on February 28 at Davidson, going a perfect 6-for-6 with six singles. He had a 17-game hitting streak from March 10 ââ'¬" April 10, batting .325 (26-for-80) in that stretch with two home runs, three triples and five doubles.

Dealing with a shoulder injury all season, Kuzbel served as Georgetown's designated hitter, appearing in 43 games with 42 starts. He finished second on the team with a .293 batting average, two triples and 27 RBI and was third with 51 hits. Kuzbel tied for second on the Hoyas with 15 multiple-hit games and tied for the team lead with seven multiple-RBI efforts. He finished the season strong with a 7-for-14 showing over the final weekend, including a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored in the season finale against Villanova. Kuzbel is GU's current active leader with 141 career hits, 31 doubles and 70 RBI. He needs just nine more base hits to become the 24th member of the 150-hit club.

Georgetown concluded the 2016 season with a 25-29 overall record and an 8-10 mark in BIG EAST play, finishing just one game out of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas reached the 25-win plateau for the second-straight season and third time in the past four years.
