WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team briefly held a 2-1 lead, but managed just four hits in falling to Creighton University, 6-2, on Friday night in a BIG EAST Conference game at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. With the loss, GU's three-game winning streak was snapped and the Hoyas fell to 23-25 on the season and 6-7 in BIG EAST play, while Creighton improved to 31-9 overall and 9-1 in conference action.
Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) started on the mound and went 6.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) and Max Allen (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) combined for 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had two of Georgetown's four hits and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) was on base twice with two walks.
Creighton got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, scoring on a single and double within the first three batters to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hoyas came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. DeRenzi led off with a triple to left as the left fielder started in and the ball sailed over his head, allowing DeRenzi to scamper all the way to third. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) then hit an RBI ground out to second, allowing DeRenzi to score from third. With two outs, Bernstein drew a walk and quickly stole second base. He came around to score when Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire/Catholic) grounded a single into left field.
The Bluejays tied the score in the bottom of the fourth on another RBI double, before taking the lead, 3-2, on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.
They tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The two teams will resume their three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m. First pitch in Omaha is set for 8 p.m. ET. Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins/Temple) will start on the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats and a web stream will be available at www.guhoyas.com.

Friday night was Smith's 48th career start, tying him with Tim Adleman ('10) and Eddie Pena ('05) for the top spot in the Georgetown career record books ... With two outs in the bottom of the second, Smith surpassed Tom Bass ('93) for the program record with 298.2 career innings pitched ... Smith now has 303.2 career innings pitched ...
