June 3, 2016 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Women's Basketball Coach Natasha Adair announced the addition of point guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) to the 2016-17 roster. Venson comes to the Hilltop from the University of Virginia where she was the Cavaliers' leading scorer a season ago.
"It's brings me great pleasure welcoming Mikayla and her family to the Hilltop. Mikayla's passion for the game and competitive spirit makes me very excited to coach, teach and mentor her," said Adair. "Her leadership, toughness, work ethic and IQ will be an immediate asset to our team, program and community. Mikayla has a warrior's spirit and a tireless work ethic on and off the court. She prides herself on producing championship results. Her court awareness, ability score and her commitment to defense will be a dominating force in the BIG EAST."
Last year, Venson averaged 15.1 points per game to lead the Cavaliers. She also led the Atlantic Coast Conference in free throw percentage, shooting 87.4 percent from the charity stripe. The sharpshooter set the program's season 3-point record with 70, and finished her career at ninth on the all-time 3-point scoring list with 131 to her credit to tie Dawn Staley.
Venson had eight twenty-point performances as a sophomore and posted a 12-game double-digit scoring streak. She was named to the Cavalier Classic All-Tournament Team and left Virginia with 837 points over two seasons.
As a freshman, Venson was a member of the ACC All-Freshman Team and set the program record for made 3-pointers by a freshman with 61. She was second in the ACC in 3-point percentage hitting 41.2 percent from beyond the arc, and averaged 11.9 ppg with four twenty-point performances to her credit. Venson finished the season with seven-straight double-digit scoring efforts including a 22-point performance against Virginia Tech.
The Arlington, Va., native played just one year of high school basketball at Yorktown High School before a concussion sidelined her for the final three seasons. At Yorktown, she was the 2011 Virginia High School League National District Co-Player of the Year and National District Rookie of the Year. Venson also earned Virginia High School League National District First Team All-District, All-Rookie Team and All-Defensive Team honors as well as spots on the Virginia Associated Press AAA All-Northern Region First Team and Washington Post All-Met Team honorable mention.
Venson played AAU with the local Team Takeover. She was the No. 33 prospect according to ESPN's Hoopgurlz and No. 7 at her position.
Venson's father, Michael, played one year of basketball at Georgetown from 1989-90 before transferring to James Madison.
This is the second ACC transfer Adair has brought to the Hilltop. Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) came to Georgetown from Wake Forest and will be eligible to play this upcoming season.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, Venson will have to sit out for one year and is eligible to play for the 2017-18 season.
"I am so excited to be a part of a great program with great coaches and players," Venson said. "I am proud to represent Hoya basketball."
