WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team opened the 2016-17 season with a match at the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday afternoon. The Hoyas managed the 9-0 victory to begin the year.
The closest match came at No. 1 singles as Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) held on for the 7-6(4), 6-3, 10-5 win over Rob Bozic. The rest of the squad won their matches handily with junior James Heaney (New Canaan, Conn./Phillips Academy Andover) managing the victory in straight sets at No. 6.
At No. 2, Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) won by a score of 6-2, 6-0. This was followed up by victories from Jordan Portner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0), Bart Panarese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2) and Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) at No. 5 with a result of 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, Georgetown won all three matches. The pair of Chen and Portner took home the 8-3 win at No. 1, while Rechan and Panarese managed the 8-2 victory at No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, Ryan McElvery (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) and Witmer won by a score of 8-1.
Georgetown will be back in action this weekend at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa. The Hoyas will face Cornell, Brown, Yale and Penn.
