Skonecki Makes 14 Saves as Field Hockey Suffers First Loss, 6-0 at Rider

Sept. 2, 2016

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Georgetown field hockey senior Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) made 14 saves, four shy of her career high, but the Hoyas dropped their first contest of the 2016 season Friday night, falling to Rider at Ben Cohen Field, 6-0.

Georgetown (2-1), which fell for the first time in 2016, was one of only 15 schools in Division I that opened the season with a 2-0 record.

Friday was the 12th meeting between the two schools with the Hoyas holding a 6-5 lead, but the Broncs (2-1) have now won the last four. The match was quite a different result than Rider's 1-0 victory at Cooper Field a year ago in which it scored the game-winner with just 16 seconds remaining.

Six different players scored and eight registered a point for the Broncs who improved to 42-6 all-time at Ben Cohen Field which opened in 2010.

Rider outshot the Hoyas 33-4, including 19-2 in the second half, and took advantage of quick scoring to maintain control. Carlie Spaeder scored just over two minutes into the match and added a second with 16:11 remaining in the opening half to lead 2-0 at the half.

The Broncs would open the second half with another quick strike just 1:55 after halftime, scoring off a penalty corner to increase their lead to 3-0. Rider would add two more goals only 43 seconds apart late in the half to push its lead to five before capping the scoring with its fourth of the half with 3:19 remaining.

Skonecki totaled at least 10 saves for the 11th time in her career and first this season. Her career high is 18 saves set against Old Dominion last year. She also had 16 saves against Temple in 2016 and Liberty in 2014. She has totaled 25 saves in two career starts against the Broncs after stopping 11 shots in last year's contest.

Skonecki has now made 303 saves in her career, moving her into seventh place on the school's all-time list.

In making her season debut, senior Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) made one defensive save while playing the entire 70 minutes. She now has five for her career to rank 12th all-time in school history, one behind senior Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer).

Georgetown concludes its four-game road trip to open the 2016 season when it travels to Monmouth on Sunday for a noon start at So Sweet A Cat Field.
