No. 1 UConn Shuts Out Georgetown

Oct. 21, 2017

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Too-ranked UConn proved too much for the Georgetown field hockey team as the Huskies shut out the Hoyas, 10-0, on Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. Georgetown (7-9 overall, 1-5 BIG EAST) could not stop four different Huskies from scoring their 10 goals in BIG EAST Conference play.

UConn (15-0 overall, 6-0 BIG EAST) capitalized on three goals within the first four minutes of play. Charlotte Veitner currently leads the nation in goals and scored five goals today against GU, four of them occurring in the first half. Casey Umstead contributed three goals today, two of which added to the 6-0 lead at the break.

The Huskies reeled off four more goals in the second half, two of them coming from Veitner and Umstead. The Blue & Gray found itself on the defensive side for most of the game, attempting only nine shots throughout the game from seven different Hoyas. Junior goalkeeper Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) had a career-high 13 saves.

Georgetown earned a total of five penalty corners to UConn's two. Georgetown is currently ranked fourth in the NCAA for most earned corners per game (9.07), just behind No. 8 Northwestern, No. 1 UConn and No. 3 Virginia.

The Blue & Gray will play tomorrow at Sacred Heart at noon. The Pioneers are currently 6-10 overall. The game will have live stats available at www.GUHoyas.com.
