WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey team created opportunities but could not capitalize within the circle as the Hoyas dropped a 3-0 decision at Cooper Field to BIG EAST opponent Liberty on Friday. The Hoyas own an overall record of 7-6 and 1-3 in BIG EAST play.
Junior goalkeeper Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) recorded nine saves during the contest.
The Hoyas were outshot 25-13, but held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. Georgetown is currently in third place in the NCAA for most penalty corners per game. The Blue & Gray averages 9.33 penalty corners per game, while No. 3 University of Virginia leads with 11.0 and No. 1 UConn has 9.82 per game.
Liberty scored all three goals in the first half. However, Georgetown picked up the pressure in the second half, using aggressive defense to stop the Flames from scoring in the frame. The Hoyas also allowed only one penalty corner for LU in the second half, while Georgetown had seven in the stanza.
The Hoyas will hit the road next weekend when they travel to Providence College on Friday for a BIG EAST game at 6 p.m. and then will travel to Lehigh University on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be available to watch via livestream and with live stats at www.GUHoyas.com.
