WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the NC State University Wolfpack (7-2) at Reynolds Coliseum. The Hoyas are 4-4 overall with two nonconference games remaining. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
On Thursday, GU fell to the University of Minnesota, 73-63, at McDonough Arena. A late run allowed the Golden Gophers to pull away. It marked the final nonconference home game of the season for the Blue & Gray.
Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) tallied her second-consecutive double-double with 23 points as well as 10 rebounds. Senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) added 17 points, while forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola) managed 12 points in the contest. Senior center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) led the Hoyas on the boards with 11 rebounds to go along with seven points and five blocks. Georgetown outrebounded the Golden Gophers, 41-33, but shot 36.2 percent (25-of-69) in the contest while Minnesota hit 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field.
White was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll the league announced on Monday. It was the second weekly honor for the Hoyas this season and the fifth of her career. In the Hoyas' lone game of the week, a 77-56 victory over FIU, White eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark with 24 points, adding a career-high 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals in the victory.
Georgetown has three Hoyas averaging in double figures. White is averaging 18.3 ppg, ranking fourth in the BIG EAST, to go along with 7.4 rpg and a league-high 23 steals. Venson is second on the squad with 13.5 ppg as well as 2.9 rpg. Petke is averaging a double-double with 12.5 ppg and 10.8 rpg.
Georgetown is outrebounding opponents by a 4.1 rpg margin to rank third in the BIG EAST and also has a +3.6 turnover margin.
NC State has four players averaging in double figures led by Chelsea Nelson with 15.1 ppg as well as a squad-best 8.7 rpg. The Wolfpack has had a balanced attack as the team boasts six different high scorers in its nine games. NC State's two losses came back-to-back to South Dakota State and Rutgers. Since then, the Wolfpack downed Tulane, 79-55, before meeting the Hoyas on Sunday.
The Hoyas are 1-1 all-time against the Wolfpack, but 0-1 in Raleigh. Georgetown downed NC State, 67-66, at home on Dec. 22, 2009. One year earlier, the Blue & Gray fell, 61-58, at Reynolds Coliseum.
