WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University swimming & diving team returned to the pool for its first meet in three weeks and cruised to a sweep over Providence College on Saturday at PC's Taylor Natatorium. The Hoya men won, 133-96, while the women's squad defeated the Friars, 129-106. The Hoyas won a total of 23 of 26 events and 15 different individuals touched the wall first.
Georgetown was paced on the men's side by sophomores Justin Summers (Weston, Conn./Weston) and Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey), who each won two events. Summers just outstretched teammate Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) in the 50-meter freestyle, touching the wall in 24.53 to win by just .04 seconds over Vanin. Summers also won the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:11.23 to lead a Georgetown sweep as Henry Hollinshead (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) and David Chung (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) finished second and third, respectively.
Blom won both diving events with scores of 248.85 and 271.65.
On the women's side, freshmen Lauren Rutledge (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Margaret Barnhorst (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) both won a pair of events as well. Rutledge swam to a four-second victory in the 200-meter freestyle, clocking in at 2:13.42. She followed that up with a narrow win in the 100-meter freestyle, touching the wall in 1:02.00 to defeat her Providence opponent by just .66 seconds.
Barnhorst finished first in both diving events with scores of 256.65 and 254.85 points.
The Hoyas will now gear up for the 2017 BIG EAST Championships which will run February 22-25 at the Nassau Aquatics Center on Long Island, N.Y.
