DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team saw Davidson College tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, but Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) lined a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth to score Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) and give the Hoyas a 6-5 win on Friday night at Davidson's Wilson Field. The game was the season opener for both squads as GU moved to 1-0 on the season and Davidson fell to 0-1.
Bernstein was on base four times with the single and three walks and drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) had three hits, an RBI and scored a run in his first collegiate game. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Racusin each had two hits, an RBI and scored a run as the first three batters in the lineup went 7-for-15 combined. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) was also on base twice and scored two runs. The Hoyas had a runner on base in all nine innings.
Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) started on the mound and went 6.2 strong innings, allowing three runs with five strikeouts. Alex Deise (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. John's College HS [D.C.]/FSU) picked up the win in his Georgetown debut, throwing 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on one hit. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's) picked up his first collegiate save, getting the last two outs. The pitching staff did not allow a walk.
Georgetown got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Hall led off and was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, he scored from first on a double by DeRenzi deep into the gap in left-centerfield. DeRenzi aggressively took third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Racusin to give GU a 2-0 lead.
The Hoyas tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) led off with a single to left and advanced to second when the ball got past the left fielder. Hall laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the pitcher threw the ball down the right field line, allowing O'Reilly to score and Hall to go all the way to third. Davis followed with a bouncing single through the right side to push Hall across the plate. After a pair of outs, three-straight walks to Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge), Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and Bernstein scored another run as Davis crossed the plate on Bernstein's free pass.
Davidson got to Mathews in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run home run to cut the lead to 5-3. A two-run homer off of Deise in the bottom of the eighth tied the game at five.
Racusin led off the top of the ninth with his second hit, lining a single into right field. He moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a ground out. With two outs, Bernstein lined a single into left field to score Racusin and give the Hoyas a 6-5 lead.
Deise got the first out in the bottom of the ninth and Swad came in and got a strikeout and ground out for his first save.
