ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Six Hoyas registered multi-hit efforts as the Georgetown University baseball team cruised past the Naval Academy, 11-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. With the win, the Hoyas snap a three-game losing skid and improve to 3-5 on the season , while the Midshipman fall to 3-5.
Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) and Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) each had two hits, three RBI and scored a run. John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) had three hits with an RBI and also scored a run. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) finished with two hits, an RBI and three runs scored while Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) had two hits and scored two runs. Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) also added two base knocks and two RBI.
Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) started on the mound and went six strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking none. Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands Regional [N.J.]) gave up one run in three innings, while registering three strikeouts, for the three-inning save.
The Hoyas jumped right on the board with two runs in the top of the first. Bernstein led off with an infield single and moved to second when DeRenzi was hit by a pitch. The runners were on second and third with two outs when Stevens lined a two-run double down the right field line to give GU a 2-0 lead.
The lead extended to 5-0 in the top of the second behind three more two-out runs. With two outs and O'Reilly on first after a single, Bernstein reached when the ball trickled through the second baseman's legs for an error. DeRenzi lined an RBI single into left to score O'Reilly and push Bernstein up to second. After a double steal put runners at second and third, Racusin launched a triple into the left-center field gap to give the Hoyas a 5-0 lead.
After three perfect innings from Leonard, Navy put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, on two singles and a double, to cut GU's lead to 5-1. The Midshipman added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff double and two-out single.
The Hoyas answered back with four runs in the top of the seventh. DeRenzi grounded a one-out triple down the right field line and scored when Racusin singled through a drawn-in infield. After Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) was hit by a pitch, Stevens singled into right field to push Racusin across the plate while both Kuzbel and Stevens moved up on the throw home. Simourian laid down a perfect safety squeeze for a single that scored Kuzbel. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) plated Stevens to give Georgetown a 9-2 lead.
The Blue & Gray tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth. Kuzbel led off with a walk and moved to second on Simourian's third hit of the game. A passed ball pushed both runners into scoring position before a two-out single by O'Reilly gave GU an 11-2 lead.
Navy scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a walk and two singles, but Abadalla struck out the final batter to end the game.
The Hoyas will cross the Potomac River on Wednesday for a matchup against George Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) will start on the mound for the Blue & Gray.
Notes ââ'¬" Tuesday was the first time the Hoyas have had two triples in a game since Rand Ravnaas ('12) had two on May 19, 2011 at Seton Hall.
