Feb. 28, 2017 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (1-3) will travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on the No. 18/18 Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays (3-1) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Homewood Field. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Mike Corey and Georgetown alum Sheehan Stanwick calling the action.
Georgetown could not overcome a second-half run, falling to the No. 17/18 Towson University Tigers, 13-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Cooper Field. It was a physical game with 70 total fouls and 13 yellow cards between the two teams. Junior midfielders Georgia Tunney (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) led the way with two goals apiece as six different Hoyas scored.
GU was outshot, 33-23, but tied the Tigers in draw controls with 11 each. Towson forced 21 Georgetown turnovers and gave up the ball just 16 times. The Blue & Gray did hold a 14-10 advantage in saves and went 5-of-7 on free position shots.
Sophomore attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) leads the team in scoring with 11 points on seven goals and a squad-best four assists this season. Whitehurst has nine points on the year with seven goals and two assists, while sophomore attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) rounds out the top three with eight goals over the first four games.
On defense, senior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has 35 saves to her credit after stopping 14 shots in a season-opening loss to Delaware. Senior defender Jenny Schwalje (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's) has forced a team-best 10 caused turnovers.
No. 10 Penn scored the final five goals of the game to beat Johns Hopkins, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon. Senior Haley Schweizer led the Blue Jays with five goals. Trailing 5-2 late in the first half, Schweizer scored with five ticks on the clock to spark a five-goal Hopkins' run that spanned less than eight minutes of game time. Caroline Cummings ended the run with her goal at 19:04 and the Quakers would score the next four to grab the win. Wednesday will be Hopkins' fourth-consecutive home game to open the 2017 season.
The Hoyas are 9-10 all-time against the Blue Jays and 5-4 on the road. Last year, the Hoyas fell, 10-4, at Cooper Field as Gebhardt had two goals in the contest. In the last meeting in Baltimore, Georgetown lost 8-6.
