Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (1-4) forced overtime, but could not get the win falling 11-10 to the No. 18/18 Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays (4-1) on Wednesday evening at Homewood Field. A goal in the final minute of regulation forced the extra period, but Hopkins scored the sudden victory goal just 1:30 in.

"We showed a lot of resilience, maintained our composure and fought back, but we have to make the most of our opportunities and play the entire game with the same intensity we showed for the last three minutes," said Head Coach Ricky Fried.

Sophomore attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led the way for the Hoyas with a hat trick going 2-of-2 on free position shots. Sophomore midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) added two goals and two assists as well as three draw controls, while freshman attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) rounded out the top three with two goals and an assist.

Georgetown outshot Hopkins, 29-26, and held a 12-11 advantage in draw controls. Both teams had 15 turnovers, and JHU held the 15-6 advantage in saves. The Blue & Gray went 5-of-9 on free position shots, and forced the Blue Jays into 0-of-3 shooting.

The Hoyas opened the game with a goal less than two minutes in as Gehbardt connected on the free position shot. This was followed by a goal from Whitehurst as she drew her defender right and then went left for the unassisted goal to make it 2-0 at 27:13.

Hopkins got on the board a minute later, but Gebhardt's second free position of the game regained the two-goal lead. This would be the trend as Ehle made it 3-for-3 from free position shots at 19:05, but once again JHU had an answer. The Blue Jays then added one more at 17:07 to tie the game at four.

The Hopkins defense came up with some big stops to keep it tied, while the Hoya defense managed to slow the Blue Jay offense as time ticked away. Senior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) came up with three big saves, but possession kept going back to Hopkins forcing the defense to keep working.

With 4:23 remaining in the half, Whitehurst scored on a free position shot for the Hoyas to move ahead 5-4. At 1:29, the Blue Jays found a hole in the defense and hit the equalizer. On the ensuing draw, JHU got the ball and managed one more goal to take the lead and make it 6-5 at the half.

Johns Hopkins opened the second with a score, but the Hoyas came right back to tie it on a pair of goals. Junior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) scored an unassisted tally at 23:00, and sophomore attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) added another just a minute later to even the score at seven apiece. At that point, sophomore goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) came up with a pair of big saves as the Blue & Gray battled.

The Blue Jays managed a 2-0 run to move ahead, but GU fought back. Ehle scored her second of the game in the run of play at 11:52 to make it 9-8 and the Hoya defense came up with some big stops.

The comeback continued at 5:34 as Whitehurst found junior midfielder Georgia Tunney (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) for the goal to tie the game back up at nine and set up an exciting final five minutes. Following a Georgetown turnover, Hopkins came down and found an opening to regain the lead with 2:56 left to play.

With 43 seconds remaining in the game, Ehle was awarded a restart and found Gehbardt cutting toward the cage. Gebhardt fired and connected to even the score at 10. Off of the final draw control, GU got the ball but the last shot was saved sending the game into overtime.

Hopkins got the opening draw of overtime, and scored on the only shot, finding the back of the cage at 4:33 to give the Blue Jays the sudden victory.

The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts George Mason at 3 p.m. at Cooper Field. It will be the second game in a doubleheader with the Georgetown men's program. Live stats and a webcast featuring Jeremy Huber and Monika Moore will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
