WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's women's rowing team opened its spring with a strong performance against West Virginia and Harvard Radcliffe. The lightweight squad won the Class of 2004 Cup for the first time since 2008 with a victory over the Crimson in the varsity 8+ race while the openweight squad won two of the 8+ races and the 4+ showdown against the Mountaineers.
Rowing in excellent conditions with flat water, no wind and slight tail current, the season opener saw temperatures start at 55 degrees and warming to 70 degrees and was the only time the lightweight and openweight squads will race at the same location this spring. The conditions were perfect aside from a pleasure boater almost getting in the way of the first race, however no incidents occurred due to some expert coxing and refereeing.
Openweights
"We have been pushing this group hard over the last couple weeks," said Head Coach Stephen Full. "There are still a lot of questions to be answered as far as who goes in what boat. What was great about today was that we showed a lot more depth than in years past. The 4+ rowed a strong clean race, and Carolyn Glandorf's work with that group has set the standard for everyone else on this team. I think we are in a strong position as we prepare for our next weekend of racing as well as the Patriot League Championships."

"The Lightweights won the Class of 2004 Cup for the first time since 2008," said Full. "We had high expectations for this crew this season. All year they have had the right energy, attitude and work ethic. Kieren Emery has done a great job since coming on in the fall with our whole team, but particularly in prepping this 8+ for this race. As a staff are all excited about what is coming for the rest of this year from this group."

Overall Assement from Head Coach Stephen Full
"What has us really excited about our next race is all the work we do as a team," said Full. "Lightweights and openweights; freshmen to seniors, walk-ons to four-year captains, working as one for the benefit of our team," Full said. "As a staff we could not ask for anything more and we look forward to watching it grow."
Georgetown returns to the water in two weeks as the lightweights travel to participate at the Knecht Cup in Mercer Lake, N.J., while the openweights remain on the Potomac to race in the GW Invite.
