WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team defeated No. 14 UC San Diego on Sunday by a score of 5-2.
The Blue & Gray won a tightly-contested doubles point, by winning at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1, Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and Jordan Portner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) won 7-6 and Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) and Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) won at No. 3, 7-6.
Georgetown continued its strong play into the singles portion by winning two matches in straight sets and two matches in three sets. Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1 and Witmer won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. The match was clinched when Beatty defeated No. 36 Eric Tseng at No. 1 by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-0. GU also picked up a win at No. 3 by Chen, who won 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
The Hoyas return to action on Tuesday, March 7 when they face off against UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m. ET.
