WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team lost a pair of games against DePaul on Senior Day. The Hoyas dropped to 11-30 and 4-10 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Blue Demons improved to 24-17 and 9-4 in conference play. DePaul won the first game by score of 5-3, and the second game, 8-1. Prior to the games, GU honored seniors Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King), Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr), Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/Jack C. Hays) and Delaney Osterday for their accomplishments.
Game 1: DePaul 5, Georgetown 3 Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started in the circle for GU, going seven innings and gave up five runs on eight hits while striking out four.
GU opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first. Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led off the inning with a base hit into left field. After a strikeout, Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md/Northern) drove a double off the fence in left field and Belknap hurried around from first base to score the first run.
DePaul responded be plating individual runs in both the second and the third innings to take a 2-1 heading to the fourth. Georgetown tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Elvina delivered a one-out base hit into left field to get the inning started. Ramsey then roped a double off the bottom of the fence to score Elvina from first.
The Blue Demons took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fifth inning, but GU fired back with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) walked to lead off the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va/ Woodgrove). Elvina then singled to put runners on first and third. Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) picked up an RBI two batters later with a single into left field to tie the game.
DePaul then scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead. The Hoya were unable to score after singles by Belknap and Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) to lead off the inning and the score stayed at 5-3.
Game 2: DePaul 8, Georgetown 1
Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) started on the rubber for the Hoyas. She pitched 3.2 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) came on in relief and pitched the final 3.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits.
DePaul plated three runs in both the second and the fourth innings and scored individual runs in the third inning and seventh innings to pick up the win.
The Hoyas lone scoring came in the sixth inning. Kane reached on an infield hit with one out to get it started and then stole second on the next pitch. Bennett then singled up the middle to score Kane which ended the scoring efforts from Georgetown.
Kane finished the game with two hits while Bennett, Belknap, and Elvina each picked up a hit.
