WASHINGTON - The seventh-seeded Georgetown University men's tennis team knocked off second-seeded St. John's on Friday by a score of 4-2. With the win, the Hoyas move on to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals where they will face third-seeded Butler at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
"A massive win for the program. I couldn't be prouder of my guys", said Georgetown Tennis Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "They've had some tough losses this year and they never stopped believing in themselves. We are pumped for the Butler Bulldogs tomorrow!"
The Blue & Gray got off to a strong start by winning a tightly-contested doubles point. At No. 1, Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) got things going with a 6-3 win. After St. John's won at No. 2, Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) and Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
In singles play, GU picked up three more victories. Beatty recorded a win in straight sets, when he won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. The Red Storm tied the match at 2-2 by winning two of the first three completed singles matches. However, the Hoyas clinched the match when Witmer won at No. 6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 and Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) won at No. 3 by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
