WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team was defeated by Towson University on Wednesday by a score of 12-4 in six innings. With the loss, the Hoyas fell to 10-21 on the season and the Tigers improved to 13-17.
Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) started on the mound for GU. She went three innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits while striking out three. Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) came on in relief to pitch the final 2.2 innings and gave up four runs on four hits.
Towson used four multi-run innings to get the win, including three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning to build a 5-0 lead.
The Blue & Gray responded with four runs in the third inning. Ciara Sullivan (Middletown, N.J./Middletown) led off with a single into left field, and advanced to second when Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) singled into left. On the next play, Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) singled to load the bases. The first two runs of the inning came on back-to-back wild pitches to score Sullivan and Belknap. After a walk to Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr), Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) singled to score Kane. The final run of the inning came from a single by Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) to score Elvina.
That would be all the Hoyas could manage offensively and Towson went on to score three runs in the third inning and four runs in the sixth inning to end the game.
The Hoyas return to the field this weekend when they continue BIG EAST Conference play at Seton Hall. Live stats for all games can be found at www.GUHoyas.com.
