Hoyas Host Vanderbilt on Saturday

April 7, 2017

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (5-7, 3-1 BIG EAST) will return home on Saturday to host the Vanderbilt University Commodores (6-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference matchup set for 1 p.m. at Cooper Field. The game will be available live on GUHoyas.com with Monika Moore calling the action.

Georgetown won a back-and-forth game against the Villanova University Wildcats, 14-13, on Wednesday at Villanova Stadium. After trailing by as many as three, Georgetown came back and held on for its third BIG EAST Conference victory of the season.

Three Hoyas tallied hat tricks as sophomore midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School), freshman attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and freshman midfielder Natalie Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) all had three goals apiece. On defense, sophomore Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) got the win with three saves to her credit. The Hoyas outshot Villanova, 29-24, and pulled in 16 draw controls to VU's 13. Georgetown went 7-of-12 on free positions, and forced 18 'Nova turnovers.

Whitehurst leads the team in scoring with 33 points on 17 goals and a squad-high 14 assists. She also has a team-leading 47 draw controls. Sophomore attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) is second with 29 points on a team-high 23 goals and six assists, while sophomore attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) has tallied 21 goals and seven assists for 28 points to round out the top three. There are seven Hoyas currently registering in double figures in points.

On defense, senior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has 75 saves to her credit, playing a majority of the minutes in goal. Senior defender Jenny Schwalje (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's) has forced a team-best 15 caused turnovers.

Georgetown and Vanderbilt are two of four teams that are currently tied for second place in the BIG EAST with 3-1 conference records. The Commodores are coming off a 16-8 win at home on Wednesday over UConn. The Dores have five players this season that have scored in double digits. Junior Kayla Peterson leads the team in goals with 25, and Julie Blaze ranks second on the team with 24.

The Hoyas are 8-0 against the Commodores and 5-0 at home. Last year, Georgetown won, 7-5, in Nashville as Gebhardt scored a hat trick. In the last meeting at Cooper Field, the Blue & Gray brought home the 10-6 victory.

The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Monika Moore will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
