Jake Kuzbel Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

June 2, 2017

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University baseball graduating senior Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) has been named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Kuzbel had been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II First Team in May, putting his name on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

Kuzbel, who received his degree in biochemistry from the Georgetown College in a special commencement ceremony for the baseball team on May 22, is the second Hoya to receive Academic All-America honors and the first since 1982 (Joe Niciforo).

Kuzbel had his best season as a senior, starting all 55 games and planting himself in the Georgetown record books. He ranked second on the team with a .335 (70-for-209) batting average and 43 RBI. He led the Hoyas with five triples while tying for second with five home runs and 13 doubles. His 10 sacrifice flies set the program's single-season record and ranked second in the country. Kuzbel reached base safely in 44-consecutive games from February 25 - May 13, which was the second-longest active streak in the country at the time. He earned an All-BIG EAST First Team selection as a designated hitter, a year after being named to the second team.

The BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 13, Kuzbel joined Georgetown's 100-RBI club with a solo home run against NYIT on April 9, and became just the 11th member of GU's 200-hit club against St. John's on May 5. In his final season, he set the program record for career at-bats (748) and sacrifice flies (15). He graduates from the Hilltop in the career top 10 in games played (199), games started (194), hits (211), doubles (44) and total bases (298).

The Blue & Gray finished the 2017 season with a 27-28 overall record, tying for the third most wins in program history. The 27 wins were also the most by a Georgetown team since 1985.
