WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team scored back-to-back goals 10 minutes into the contest and never looked back as the Hoyas managed a decisive 8-0 shutout over the Appalachian State University Mountaineers (1-1) Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field. The Blue & Gray saw 11 different players score a point as a balanced attack moved Georgetown to 2-0 on the season.
"As a staff, we are pleased with how this group performed in our first weekend of match play. We are valuing a team oriented style of hockey and are seeing some newcomers step up to the plate. While we are pleased with our first step, there is much to work on and sharpen as we prepare for a very tough Rider squad Friday," said Georgetown Head Coach Shannon Soares.
A penalty corner 10 minutes into the contest opened it up as sophomore transfer Emily Fraser (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored her first goal on the Hilltop off of a true penalty corner. Following the pushback, the Hoyas intercepted the ball and sent it up the field as junior forward Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) found freshman midfielder Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) in front of the cage who got it past keeper Rachel Gaines to give the Blue & Gray the 2-0 advantage.
Less than a minute later, a scramble in front of the goal allowed Cronin to slide it to freshman midfielder Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) to make it 3-0. This momentum would carry throughout the game as the Hoyas pounded in three more before the half.
Osborne would get her second of the game at 17:29 as Masiello drove the middle of the cirle and found Osborne alone at the left post who slid it in.
At 6:41, a Hoya shot bounced off of Gaines' pads, and to a waiting Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa./Villa Maria) who sent it right back in. Less than two minutes later, senior midfielder Joanna Hawkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) capped off the half with a goal off of a penalty corner to make it 6-0 at the break.
The Mountaineers would never find a rhythm as the Hoyas kept pressing in the second half.
Freshman midfielder Nell Van Schaack (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) scored her first career goal midway through the second as Masiello had a breakaway and Van Schaack sent it over the keeper to make it 7-0.
The final goal came with 15 minutes left as a Hoya was surrounded in the middle, but managed to get it to sophomore forward Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) for the score to make the final 8-0. It marked Masiello's third assist on the afternoon.
Georgetown outshot Appalachian State, 15-12, and took four penalty corners, scoring on two, to the Mountaineers' six. Gaines took the loss in the cage with seven saves, while junior goalkeeper Chloe Verweil (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) notched her first shutout and second victory of the season with six saves on the afternoon.
Georgetown will continue its four-game homestand to begin the season on Friday as the squad hosts Rider University at Cooper Field at 2 p.m. Live stats and a new-and-improved webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
