Sept. 1, 2017 WASHINGTON - Georgetown outshot Rider and created several scoring opportunities, but could not capitalize and the Broncs added a pair of goals in the final five minutes as the Hoyas fell, 3-0, at Cooper Field on Friday afternoon.
It was the first loss of the season for the Hoyas, who fall to 2-1, while Rider improves to 2-0.
"We were proud of our team's effort to match and, at times, exceeds Rider's aggressive and proactive style of play," Head Coach Shannon Soares said. "We knew they were going to come at us for 70 minutes and I think we combatted that well for about 60 minutes today. Statistically, the match was fairly even, but we have to execute on our attacking opportunities."
Rider came out aggressive in the opening minutes, with five penalty corners and five shots in the opening 10 minutes, but Georgetown junior goalkeeper Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) was up to the task, making three saves with one shot blocked.
In the 11th minute, however, Rider's Allison Baligian picked up a loose ball from about 20 yards out and dribbled in to the far post. Baligan spun around and took a shot from six yards out that beat Verwiel, giving the Broncs a 1-0 lead at 10:31.
From that point forward, the Hoyas were able to control the pace of play and finished the first half with eight shots. Paced by five penalty corners in the closing 15 minutes, the Hoyas had shots from freshman Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) and sophomores Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Emily Fraser (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) that were saved by Rider goalkeeper Lena Vandam.
In the second half, the Hoyas were again able to take control on the offensive end and had opportunities ââ'¬" holding an 8-5 edge in shots and 6-3 advantage in penalty corners ââ'¬" as they looked for the equalizer. Freshman Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa./The Agnes Irwin School) had three shots midway through the second half that were saved, blocked and went wide.
As Georgetown continued to look for the tying goal, Rider took advantage of its third corner of the half in the 65th minute. A shot from Melissa Cunningham on the left wing came to the front of the goal and Jessica Randazzo knocked it past Verwiel after a deflection, giving Rider a 2-0 lead at 65:15.
The Broncs pushed the lead to 3-0 when Baligian scored on a penalty shot with just over a minute left in the game.
Georgetown outshot Rider, 16-14, while each team took 11 corners.
The Hoyas continue their home weekend on Sunday, Sept. 3, hosting Lock Haven at 1 p.m.
