Sept. 15, 2017 Final Stats
WASHINGTON - It was a close match for the Georgetown University field hockey team (4-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) and the Quinnipiac University Bobcats (2-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) on Friday afternoon at Cooper Field, but the Hoyas unfortunately could not come out on top in its first BIG EAST game of the season. The squad fell by a score of 2-1 after a hard fought battle.
"Obviously disappointed with the result from today," said Head Coach Shannon Soares. "Statistically, with respect to circle penetrations, shots and APC's, we won every category, but lacked the ability to control the controllables. Credit to Quinnipiac for making the most of their opportunities. We will quickly turn the page as we prepare for Towson on Sunday."
Georgetown played aggressively in the first half, with six shots and four penalty corners, while QU fired five shots and only one penalty corner. Georgetown's goalkeeper Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) did her best to save the opposing team's shots, but unfortunately Quinnipiac's Anna Walmsley got past Verwiel and scored for the Bobcats halfway through the first half.
Halfway into the second half of the game, the Bobcats' Lauren Belskie scored the second goal for the opposing team from just inside the circle barely past Verwiel, making the score 2-0.
The Blue & Gray knew it needed a comeback and attempted three times to get the ball past Golini until sophomore Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) finally got a shot from the left with the assist from Emily Fraser (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) to make the score 2-1. This was Getz's third goal of the season and Fraser's second assist.
With 13 minutes left of the game, the Hoyas tried fighting back by taking out Verwiel and adding Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph's Academy) as the kickingback to add an extra man on the playing field. However, after a tough battle, the Bobcats came out on top.
The Hoyas outshot the Bobcats, 14-9, during the game, while Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) had four saves and Quinnipiac's goalkeeper Livy Golini had three saves.
The Hoyas will face the Towson Tigers on Sunday at noon at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The game will be available to watch via livestream and with live stats at www.GUHoyas.com
