WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey team (5-4, 0-2 BIG EAST) could not overcome Old Dominion's four first-half goals in both teams' second BIG EAST match of the season. The Hoyas lost 6-2 to the Monarchs on Friday evening in Norfolk, Va.
GU fell behind within the first 15 minutes of the game when ODU (4-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) scored three goals by three different scorers. While the Hoyas contributed strong defensive efforts, Old Dominion was still able to get four shots past Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) within the first half of the game.
Freshman Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa./The Agnes Irwin School) put Georgetown on the board with 8:50 left in the first half with a shot off the penalty corner, assisted by Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joesph's Academy) and Joanna Hawkins Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). This is van der Veen's first goal of the season, Maransky's fourth assist and Hawkins's second.
The Blue & Gray played more aggressive in the second half, registering five shots and three penalty corners, however GU could not stop ODU from scoring.
