WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team came out ready to play today as they scored three- straight goals in a BIG EAST game against Temple University. The Hoyas won 3-2 at Cooper Field, improving their overall record to 6-5 and 1-2 in league play.
"Our challenge today was showing up and focusing on the things that we can control, that's work rate, effort and energy," said Georgetown Head Coach Shannon Soares. "(This win) was very important, it keeps us in the hunt and obviously helps motivate us as we move forward to the rest of the season."
Temple (3-7, 0-3 BIG EAST) got the game going in the first half when Taylor Alba put the first point on the board. The Blue & Gray fought back by scoring two more goals in the first half. Junior Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) tied the game up with an assist by Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) with 14 minutes left in the first half. This was Masiello's second goal of the season and Cronin's third assist.
The Hoyas kept scoring when freshman Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) scored the second goal of the game for Georgetown, making it her team-best seventh goal of the season. Her goal was off the penalty shot assisted by Anna Farley (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) and Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph's Academy). This was Farley's fourth assist of the season and Maransky's team-leading fifth.
In the second half, Georgetown scored its third straight goal of the game, thanks to Nell Van Schaack (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and another assist from Cronin. Van Schaack scored her fifth goal this season and Cronin marked her fourth assist this season, her second of the game.
The Hoyas led the rest of the game, 3-1, until Temple scored with less than two minutes left. Georgetown was able to keep the Owls from tying the game up with 1:11 remaining in the game with strong defense.
This is Georgetown's first time winning against Temple since 2001.
The Hoyas will play on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cooper Field against the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds. The game will be available to watch via livestream and through live stats at www.GUHoyas.com
