Hoyas Fall Short in Shoot Out

Sept. 8, 2017

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (3-2) lost 2-1 to the University of Massachusetts Lowell in a stroke-off under the lights Friday night at the Wicked Blue Field. Following regulation, the squads battled through two overtime periods before moving to a stroke-off.

UMass-Lowell (4-1) came out aggressive right away when Anouk Lalande scored the River Hawks' first goal within the first two minutes of the game. The Blue & Gray would have opportunities in the first, but could not find the back of the cage the UMass-Lowell went into the break leading, 1-0.

It would be much of the same to open the second half as the Hoyas searched for the equalizer. Midway through the stanza, everything changed as freshman Anna Farley (Bell Air, MD/Bell Air) scored her first career goal. Farley took the pass from classmate Nell Van Schaack (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) from the right to tie the game.

At the end of regulation, the score was tied, 1-1. The teams battled through two extra periods as the River Hawk offense pushed, but the Hoya defense stood strong.

Following 115 minutes of play, the game went into a stroke-off. With the shootout tied 2-2, it became a sudden-death situation. The Hoyas missed the shot, and the River Hawks' Sophie Gehrels connected on the final shot to win the game, 2-1, for the home team.

"Our staff is so proud of all 21 of our players tonight. We challenged them to be present in every play, to compete for a full 70 minutes," said Coach Shannon Soares. "They did just that for 110 minutes and then some. We certainly faced some adversity tonight, but with those types of moments comes great growth. We're proud of the steps forward we made tonight. Now our attention quickly turns to a very talented Holy Cross team who we'll match up against Sunday."

The Blue & Gray outshot UMass-Lowell, 26-22, while junior goalkeeper Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) ended the game with 10 saves.

The Hoyas will face Holy Cross on Sunday at noon on Hart Turf Field. The game will be available to watch via livestream and with live stats at www.GUHoyas.com.
