WASHINGTON - Georgetown University swimming & diving sophomore Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Female Swimming & Diving Athlete of Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The award recognizes Barrett's efforts during GU's dual meet against Drexel on Saturday.
Barrett continued her strong season, taking home victories in both the 1,000- and 500-yard freestyles in Saturday's meet against Drexel. She got the Hoyas off to a strong start, winning the first individual event - the 1,000 - by more than 10 seconds (10:31.40) as Georgetown swept the top three spots in the event. Later in the meet, the sophomore won a tight race in the 500-yard freestyle, surging ahead in the second half of the race to win by two seconds (5:07.04).
This is Barrett's first career weekly award, and the fourth of the season for the Blue & Gray. Previously, Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass./Central Catholic) was named the male athlete of the week on Nov. 7, before he and Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) swept the honors on Nov. 21.
The Hoyas will be back in action for their final regular season meet of the year, when they take on BIG EAST opponents Seton Hall and Providence in a neutral site meet on Saturday, Feb. 3. The tri-meet will take place at the Berkeley Aquatic Club in New Providence, New Jersey.
