WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's rowing team opened its fall racing season with a strong performance at the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia on Saturday. The Hoyas posted four different top-four times in the head races, two each from the heavyweight and lightweight crews.
Heavyweight
Five different heavyweight boats saw action in three different races on the day. The Georgetown "B" crew posted a third place finish in the open/collegiate 4+ race in 13:35.24 while the "A" squad finished eighth with a time of 13:55.24.
Georgetown's heavyweight boat in the JV 8+ race finished fourth with a time of 12:31.14 while the "A" and "B" boats finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the open/collegiate 8+ event.
"Overall, it was an interesting day for the Heavyweight squad," said Head Coach Luke Agnini. "I thought the fours went well enough, given the circumstances. Those eight guys comprised the top open 8+ later in the afternoon and they just didn't seem ready. They're a young group and didn't quite have enough time to prepare, but I loved the effort. This is a group that goes hard and they just need to learn how to be effective. The stern three were all freshman rowing in their first college race and they will definitely learn from this. The second 8+ did a fantastic job improving from the JV race to the open race. That boat has four freshmen and four sophomores, they capitalized on a week of improvements and had a couple good runs down the course today."
Lightweight
On the lightweight side, the Hoyas had their best performance of the day with a second place finish in the open/collegiate lightweight 4+ with a time of 13:17.32. Georgetown also placed fourth in the open/collegiate lightweight 8+ in 12:07.23.
"Today we started the season with solid races from the whole lightweight team," said Varsity Lightweight Coach
Lee Rumpf. "Quick times in the 8 and 4, stayed ahead of Navy and Temple, and good races from the JV and freshman boats all added together for a performance we can be proud of. We also identified plenty of room for improvement. Considering our limited water time so far this year things will only continue to improve. We're excited for the Charles and the Chase coming up!"
The other two lightweight crews finished sixth in the collegiate JV 8+ race and eighth in the collegiate freshman/novice event.
Georgetown is back in action at the Head of the Charles Regatta on October 21 in Boston.
