WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team swept the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week awards, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Sophomore Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) was named the Male Athlete of the Week, while junior Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) earned Female Athlete of the Week honors. The awards recognize their efforts in Georgetown's meet against Towson and James Madison on Saturday.
 
Carbone continued his hot start to the season, sweeping both backstroke events. He won the 100-yard race in 50.85 seconds, the fastest time in the BIG EAST this season, touching the wall first by just a half second. He also took the top spot in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.51, again the conference's best time and a top-100 time in the country, beating his Towson opponent by more than a full second. Carbone also came in second in the 200 IM, and swam the second leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, completing his 100 yards in 47.63 seconds as Georgetown placed second.
 
Barrett picked up the GU women's only individual win, touching the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a BIG EAST-best time of 10:19.87 to finish first by nearly five seconds. She also came in third in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.40, also the fastest time this year in the conference.
 
These are the first weekly awards of the season for Carbone and Barrett, and the third for the Hoyas as sophomore Phoebe Slaughter (Darien, Conn. / Darien) earned BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week honors last week. Overall, it is the third career weekly award for Carbone, and the second for Barrett.
 
The Hoyas will be off until Saturday, Nov. 3 when it hosts BIG EAST rival Villanova in a dual meet at Albert G. McCarthy Pool. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
