WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University field hockey team (11-6 overall, 2-4 BIG EAST) will host No. 5 UConn (14-3 overall, 6-0 BIG EAST) at Cooper Field on Friday, Oct. 26 in its final game of the 2018 campaign. Last weekend, the Hoyas hosted a pair of games each going into a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of even play. On Friday, GU was edged by BIG EAST opponent Providence 2-1 with the regulation goal scored by senior
Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa. / Villa Maria). On Sunday, the Hoyas faced a similar 1-1 result against Longwood after regulation, this time capturing the penalty shootout win with three saves from freshman goalkeeper
Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary). Both
Sydney Stephenson (Bel Air, Md. / Bryn Mawr School) and
Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia) converted in the penalty shootout to give the Hoyas the 2-1 win.
After the weekend, sophomore
Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) leads the team with 20 points off of nine goals and two assists. Junior
Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy) is right behind her with 19 points from eight goals and three assists. Sophomore
Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa. / The Agnes Irwin School) leads in the assists category with seven. Weets has compiled 74 saves on the season for a 1.79 goals against average and .712 save percentage.
The Huskies are currently on a two-game win streak against Boston University and BIG EAST opponent Liberty. UConn's three losses of the season have come in the second half of its schedule as the Huskies were edged by then-No. 3 Maryland, then-No. 5 Princeton and No. 1 UNC. Fifth year back Cecile Pieper is leading the Huskies in the points and goals categories with 43 points from 17 goals and nine assists. Starting goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher has complied 71 saves on the season for a 1.32 goals against average. The Hoyas are 0-13 in the all-time series against the Huskies.
