WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's rowing team, fresh off competition at the Head of the Charles, posted another strong performance at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, New Jersey on Sunday. The Hoyas sent a varsity lightweight 8+, a freshman heavyweight 8+, a freshman lightweight 8+ and three lightweight 4+ boats to race the three-mile course.
Lightweight
Five different lightweight boats saw action in three different races throughout the day. The Hoyas were able to post a top-five finish in the Varsity Lightweight 8+ event finishing fifth with a time of 13:32.7. The Blue & Gray sent one boat featuring
Hannah Elwell (Worcester, Mass.) as the coxswain with
Artym Hayda (Providence, R.I.),
Olivier Malle (New York, N.Y.),
Joe Cecil (Alpharetta, Ga.),
Kiefer Mueller (Rye, N.Y.),
Reid Noch (Naples, Fla.),
Jonathan Menendez (Miami Lakes, Fla.),
Hector Formoso-Murias (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and
Liam Lafferty (Orinda, Calif.) to round out the lineup. Georgetown was edged slightly by Cornell, Princeton, Navy, and Penn.
In the freshman heavyweight/lightweight 8+ race, the Hoyas finished in 11th place. For the final event of the day, the lightweight 4+ race saw two of three Georgetown boats finish in the top 10. In the "A" boat,
Ryan Zuccala (Orchard Park, N.Y.) served as coxswain, with Hayda at stroke, followed by Malle, Lafferty, and Formoso-Murias. The men finished in fourth place out of a field of 25 with a time of 14:55.3.
"I am really pleased with our results today as a team," said Varsity Lightweight Coach
Lee Rumpf. "This is the best depth we've shown since I've been here and one of the best in recent memory for the eight. We also improved our comparative results versus teams like Penn and Delaware between Navy Day and today. We won't see any league competition until March, so it was great to wrap up our league fall season with a solid performance."
Heavyweight
The Hoyas only heavyweight boat posted a 10th-place finish with a time of 14:19.6 in the freshman heavyweight/lightweight 8+ category. The eight lineup featured
Anna Pogrebivsky (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.) as the coxswain, with
Justin English (Bettendorf, Iowa) at stroke, followed by
Jack Mozingo (Darien, Conn.),
Owen O'Brien Powers (Portland, Ore.),
Jeremy Wolpert (Newport Beach, Calif.),
Kyle Harrison (Phoenix, N.Y.), William Cave (Dallas, Texas),
Thomas Kolnik (Sewell, N.J.) and
Max Keating (Chestnut Hill, Mass.).
After the Chase, the Hoyas will close out the fall season at the Head of the Occoquan in Sandy Run, Virginia on Nov. 3.
