WASHINGTON– Five members of the Georgetown University women's tennis team competed in the Harvard Invite last weekend. Over the course of the three-day event,
Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula),
Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley High School),
Elena De Santis (Avellino, Italy / Convitto Nazionale P. Colletta),
Sofie Moenster (Oslo, Norway / Ordup Gymnasium) and
Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md. / Holton Arms School) squared off against opponents from Harvard, Michigan State and Cornell.
On Friday, the Hoyas faced host team Harvard in four singles and two doubles matches. GU dropped the four singles matches despite Nakagawa taking her opponent to three sets after an early lead in the first set. She was edged 5-7, 6-1, 11-9. The doubles pair of Lynham and Moenster picked up a 6-3 doubles win against Irene Lu and Chelsea Williams to round out the day.
In Saturday's matchup against Michigan State, Lynham defeated her opponent in straight sets 7-6, 6-2 for the one Hoya victory in the matchup.
On the final day of the event, the Hoyas tallied four additional wins against Cornell. Moenster defeated Maria Adiaconitei in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 while De Santis edged her opponent for the second singles win on the day 6-2, 6-4. GU swept the doubles duel with victories from Nakagawa and Moenster 6-3, and De Santis and Lynham 6-2.
The Hoyas will return to action in January as they open their match play against Army at West Point.
