TOWSON, Md. - Remaining undefeated through three games, the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team defeated 19th-ranked Towson, 12-10, on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas improve to 3-0 on the season, their best start to a campaign since 2003.
Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the Blue & Gray with four goals and a pair of assists. He eclipsed the 100 career point mark with his fifth point of the game and became just the 21st Hoya in program history with 100 points. He also moved into the top-20 list in career goals at Georgetown with 68.
Lucas Wittenberg (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison/Mercer) added two goals and an assist for GU while Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) and Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) both tallied a pair of goals. Robert Clark (Cooksville, Md./McDonogh School) and Greg Galligan (Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y./St. Anthony's) both scored as well.
Massimo Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./IMG Academy) and Stephen MacLeod (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius) were credited with assists.
Defensively, Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) earned his third win of the season between the pipes behind an eight-save performance to go with four ground balls. Peter Tagliaferri (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Kieran Jenkins (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) each caused a pair of turnovers while Jenkins led all Hoyas with six ground balls.
Georgetown took the early advantage as Wittenberg put the Blue & Gray on the board just 1:21 into the game. After Towson evened things up, GU posted back-to-back goals from Carraway and Berge to lead 3-1 with 8:16 remaining in the opening frame. The host Tigers responded, outscoring Georgetown 4-0 down the stretch to take a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second, the Hoyas scored five unanswered goals over the first 12 minutes on the frame to lead 8-5. Towson would respond with two goals in the final 2:05 to pull within one, down 8-7, going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Tigers quickly evened the score at 8-8 with a goal 62 seconds into the half, but matching goals from Wittenberg and TU's Jon Mazza were the only other scoring in the frame en route to a 9-9 tie at the end of the third.
A skip shot from more than 15 yards out by Berge at the 13:27 mark gave GU a one-goal advantage before Carraway converted on Georgetown's lone man-up opportunity to create some breathing room for the Hoyas, up 11-9, with 10:48 to play. Battling to keep in the game, Towson pulled within one at the 7:20 mark, but Bucaro's fourth goal of the game with 3:09 to play, coupled with a strong defensive stand, sealed the victory for the visiting Blue & Gray.
Mazza and Phil Weis led Towson with three goals apiece. Josh Miller collected 12 saves in the loss.
The Hoyas return to the friendly confines of Cooper Field as they host Mount St. Mary's (1-3) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
