WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis squad won its first home game against Monmouth on Friday afternoon at Yates Field House. The Hoyas defeated the Hawks, 5-2, advancing them to 1-1 this season.
In doubles, the Hoyas won all three matches against the Hawks. Seniors Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) defeated Ale Gomez Estrada and Srdjan Jakovljevic, 6-3, while junior Michael Chen (Holdmel, N.J./Holmdel) and freshman Rohan Kamdar (Singapore/Angelo Chinese School) knocked off Nicola Pipoli and Alberto Giuffrida, 7-5. Senior Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Dioceasn Boys' School) and sophomore Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) finished it off in doubles with a 6-2 win over Sergio Martinez and Will Cooke Wharton.
In singles, the Blue & Gray won four out of six matches against Monmouth. Freshman Mark Militzer (Charleston, S.C./Connections Academy) lost his first set against Estrada, 3-6, but came back in the next set, 6-4, and finished the last set, 6-4, to take the win. Chen won both sets against Giuffrida, 7-6 (1), 7-5, along with Lam, who defeated Martinez, 6-2, 7-5. Connor Lee finished it off for the Hoyas in singles, winning both sets, 6-1, 6-2, over Cooke Wharton.
Georgetown will be back in action on February 23 when the team travels to Cincinatti, Ohio to take on the Xavier Muskateers in the first BIG EAST match of the season at 1 p.m.
