WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University track & field team competed at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday night. The meet, hosted by Texas A&M University at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, served as the culmination of the indoor track & field season. The Hoyas competed in the men's mile preliminary round as well as the men's distance medley relay finals.
Despite running the seventh-fastest time of the day, All-American Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) failed to advance to the 10-person final due to his placement in a far faster heat. With the top four each from a two-heat semifinal automatically advancing and an additional two on time, Bartelsmeyer managed a 4:02.36 in his preliminary heat, a race that came down to the runners spreading across the finish line. Even though he went for the lean, his time was seventh overall by one-hundredth of a second with only the fifth and sixth competitors from that heat advancing on time. The four automatic qualifiers from the first heat all clocked slower times than Bartelsmeyer.
A mere three hours later, Bartelsmeyer stepped back on the track to run the leadoff leg of the men's distance medley relay. The Hoya foursome of Bartelsmeyer, Kenny Rowe (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield), Rey Rivera (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and All-American Spencer Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) placed 11th in the race.
The 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field All-Americans will be released next week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Georgetown opens the outdoor track & field season on Saturday, March 17 at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Maryland.
