WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team will kick off a six-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts Coppin State in the team's home opener. The Hoyas are coming off of a 2-5 spring break trip to the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. Georgetown defeated Western Michigan, 9-5, on March 7, and Saint Joseph's, 4-1, on March 11.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) and freshman shortstop Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) were both named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Killiam appeared in two games for the Hoyas last week, pitching a total of 8.0 innings, allowing two runs while striking out five. He made his first start of the season on Sunday versus Saint Joseph's and pitched 6.0 strong innings of one-run ball, allowing just five hits and zero walks to pick up the win. He tied a career high with five strikeouts. McCabe batted .476 (10-for-21) last week, recording multi-hit performances in four of the five games. He had three hits in a 9-5 victory over Western Michigan on Wednesday, while also recording a double and two RBIs on Tuesday versus Northeastern and Saturday against Saint Joseph's.
McCabe is second on the team with a .352 (19-for-54) batting average, trailing only Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS), who is hitting at a .379 (11-for-29) clip. The two are tied for the team lead with seven RBIs apiece, and McCabe also has a team-leading five doubles. Freshman Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) will make his second career start on Wednesday. In his collegiate debut on Saturday against Saint Joseph's, Grzebinski went 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out one.
Coppin State currently sits at 1-9-1 overall, and will play NJIT on Tuesday. The Eagles are riding an eight-game losing streak, but posted a win earlier this year over North Carolina A&T and tied with Mount St. Mary's. Allen Saar is leading the Coppin State offense with a .500 (12-for-24) batting average, and the team is hitting at a .249 clip collectively. The pitching staff owns a 6.52 ERA and opponents are batting .308 against them.
