Hoyas Head to South Carolina for Charleston Invitational

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team will hit the road again for the Charleston Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina on March 16-18. The Hoyas will play four games over a three-day slate, beginning Friday morning at 11 a.m. to face Eastern Illinois. GU currently holds a 6-17 overall record.

Following Friday morning's game against Eastern Illinois, the Blue & Gray will take the field again at 3:30 p.m. to face Jacksonville State. Georgetown will then play one game on Saturday, taking on Jacksonville State again, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be the final day of the tournament for the Hoyas, as they face Texas at 10 a.m.

Georgetown went 1-4 last weekend in the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The Hoyas won their first game of the tournament against Grand Canyon, 6-5. The squad defeated the Lopes in extra innings when junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) scored on a passed ball. Belknap had three hits, two runs and an RBI.

GU dropped a decision in the second game of the doubleheader against Grand Canyon, and then to Iowa and Minnesota the following days of the tournament.

Eastern Illinois went 4-1 this past week in the Holy City Showdown and then defeated Charleston Southern, 5-4, on Tuesday in a mid-week contest. The Panthers, who improved to 17-7 overall, lost to Furman in the tournament, 6-5, in extra innings. Haley Mitchell leads her team, batting .406, with eight doubles, seven home runs and 31 RBIs. Mitchell is ranked among the top 10 in the country in RBIs.

Jacksonville State is currently 9-12 this season and went 1-4 in the Georgia Bulldog Classic last weekend. The Gamecocks defeated Radford in their final game of the tournament, 6-5. The squad also won two contests during the week, including a 17-1 victory over Alabama State on Tuesday. Taylor Beshears leads JSU with a .377 batting average, seven doubles, one triple, three home runs and 14 RBIs.

Texas is 9-11 this season and has won 3 out of the last six games it has played. The Longhorns have defeated the University of Texas at San Antonio, 1-0, as well as Arizona, 3-1, and shut out Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, 8-0. Janae Jefferson has recorded five doubles, a triple and eight RBIs this season.

The Charleston Invitational will be the final tournament of the regular season for the Blue & Gray. Following this weekend, Georgetown will kick off BIG EAST play against Providence in Providence, Rhode Island on March 24-25.
