WASHINGTON - Upon closing the indoor season last weekend, the Georgetown University track & field program did not hesitate as it opened the outdoor season just one week later at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Maryland on Saturday. The Hoyas opened the season with seven marks among the top 10 as many of the student-athletes used the meet to acclimate to the change in season and conditions.
The Blue & Gray managed seven marks among the top 10 at the season-opening meet. Senior Jody-Ann Knight (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville) was the top collegiate finisher in the women's 400-meter dash as she and Shannon Meisberger (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) took second and third in the first heat, behind post collegiate runner Claudia Saunders.
Freshman Malika Houston (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington HS) finished second overall in the women's 100-meter hurdles, while Taylor Williams (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham/Clemson) put up a fifth-place showing in the women's 200-meter dash.
In the men's sprints, sophomore Quincey Wilson (Lithonia, Ga./Arabia Mountain) finished seventh in the 400-meter dash.
Bryan Bjerk (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River/Minnesota) put up a second-place mark in the men's shot put, while Sean Waterton (Fairfax, Va./Thomas Jefferson/Cornell) managed a fourth-place performance in the men's triple jump.
The Maryland Invitational serves as a good opening to the season but the program looks forward to the weekend of March 30-31 when the team will split sites between the Stanford Relays, Florida Relays and Raleigh Relays and compete across the country as a complete program.
