Final Stats

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team lost its first non-tournament home game on Wednesday afternoon, falling to Kent State at Nats Youth Academy, 17-5. With the setback, the Hoyas fall to 7-23, 0-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Golden Flashes improve to 16-11.

Sophomore Isabelle Ortiz (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista High School) got the start on the mound for the Hoyas and went 0.1 innings, allowing two hits and four runs. Sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) relieved Ortiz for the next 1.0 innings, giving up four hits and six runs until sophomore Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J./Marlton) finished off the game. Kozak pitched 3.2 innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs whilestriking out two.

A trio of Hoyas led the team at the plate with two hits each. Sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) had two hits, including her third home run of the season. Senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) also had two hits, including a triple, as well as an RBI. Freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda High School) rounded out those with two hits and collected two RBIs. Junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) contributed a double to the team.

After the Golden Flashes jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Blue & Gray scored three runs in the bottom. Bennett's double hit put GU in the scoring column, and shortly after, Jones singled to left field, collecting two RBIs for the squad, to cut the deficit to 8-3.

Kent State scored four more runs in the second inning and held off the Hoyas until the bottom of the third when Holiday homered to left center. While the Golden Flashes scored five more runs in the top of the fourth, GU scored one more run in the game when Kane tripled to left center and drove in the final run.

The Hoyas had nine hits, walked once and struck out four times against the Golden Flashes.

The Blue & Gray will take the field again on Thursday for a three-game BIG EAST series against St. John's. The teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday at noon and will conclude the series on Friday at noon. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
