April 19, 2018 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior Ryan Hursey (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) was selected by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the fifth round, 42nd overall, in the 2018 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft on Wednesday night. Hursey is the 34th Hoya to be selected in an MLL Draft in program history.
A short stick defensive midfielder, Hursey has been a mainstay on GU's rope unit after transitioning from the offensive midfield after his freshman season. He has played in 53 games, starting nine, and has tallied 26 ground balls to go with 11 caused turnovers during his time on the Hilltop. A dual-threat athlete, Hursey has also scored 13 goals to go with a pair of assists for 15 career points.
Off the field, Hursey is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic selection and will graduate from Georgetown's School of Nursing & Health Studies in May with a degree in nursing.
Hursey is the highest draft pick from the Hoyas since Barney Ehrmann (B'12) was selected by the Bayhawks in the fourth round in 2011. In all, the Bayhawks franchise has chosen eight different Hoyas, including Hursey, in the draft.
Georgetown currently has a pair of players on MLL rosters for the 2018 season. Brodie Merrill (C'05) is in his 14th season in the MLL and is in his fifth season with the Boston Cannons. He is the all-time ground ball leader in the MLL. Charlie Ford (C'17) was chosen in 2017 MLL Supplemental Draft by the Florida Launch and elevated to the 25-player roster for this upcoming season.
Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, was founded by Jake Steinfeld and is headquartered in Boston. MLL has led the sport of lacrosse into the mainstream of competitive team sports since 2001. The league is made up of nine teams: The Atlanta Blaze, Boston Cannons, Charlotte Hounds, Chesapeake Bayhawks, Dallas Rattlers, Denver Outlaws, Florida Launch, New York Lizards and Ohio Machine.
