WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of losses to Villanova on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST doubleheader in Philadelphia. The Hoyas fell 5-1 in game one and then 8-1 in game two. With the pair of losses, GU falls to 13-32, 4-9 in the BIG EAST, while the Wildcats improve to 21-17-1 with a 6-5 mark in the league.
In game one, the Blue & Gray were led offensively by junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) and freshmen Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) and NeNe Campos (Nogales, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro), each recording one hit apiece. Georgetown had a total of three hits against Villanova.
In the circle, sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) took the nod. Pacha pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and five runs while walking three and striking out eight. Sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) pitched the last inning, not allowing any hits or runs against her.
Game one remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the Wildcats scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the fourth off of two doubles and a sacrifice fly. GU scored its lone run in the top of the seventh when junior Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) grounded out to the pitcher while freshman Macy Cartwright (Naples, Fla./Naples) scored on the throw to first, allowing the Hoyas to finish the game with a run in the scoring column, 5-1.
In game two, senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) led the Hoyas at the plate with three hits, including a triple, her second of the season. Junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) recorded two hits and an RBI. GU had seven hits.
Freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch) went 3.0 innings on the mound while giving up six hits, six runs, walking three and striking out one. Vannicola closed the game, pitching the next 3.0 innings while allowing four hits, two runs and striking out one.
Villanova scored three runs in both the first and third innings and entered the fourth inning with a 6-0 lead. The Hoyas entered the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth when Belknap singled to left field and scored Kane from third base. The Wildcats scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Blue & Gray will return to the field on Sunday to conclude the BIG EAST series against Villanova. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Live stats and video will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
