WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team defeated BIG EAST rival Villanova on Saturday afternoon in its final match of the regular season, 4-2. All three seniors on the team tallied wins for the Hoyas. With the victory, GU improves to 8-5 this season.
The Blue & Gray earned the doubles point, beginning with sophomore Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) and junior Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) at the No. 3 position as they swept Matt Phelps and Mike Czlonka, 6-0. Seniors Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) clinched the doubles win at the No. 1 spot against Will Elmore and Stefan Suarez, 6-2.
In singles, freshman Connor Lee (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) won his battle over Thomas Dodson at No. 3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Freshman Charlie Sharton (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) knocked off Dylan Flanagan at the No. 4 position, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Senior Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) clinched the win for the Hoyas at No. 5 against Tommy Mulflur, 6-0, 7-5.
The Blue & Gray will return to action for the BIG EAST Championship on April 26-29 in Cayce, South Carolina. Seeds for the tournament will be announced at a later date.
