WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team fell to BIG EAST top-ranked Creighton on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Bluejays in the weekend finale of a three-game BIG EAST series. With the loss, GU falls to 14-35 on the season, 5-12 in the conference, while Creighton improves to 24-14 overall and 9-3 in the BIG EAST.
The Blue & Gray tallied five hits against the Bluejays, with five Hoyas contributing one hit apiece to the effort. Sophomore Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) went 1-for-2 at the plate and collected her 21st RBI of the season, ranked third on the team in RBIs.
Sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) took the nod in the circle for Georgetown for the first 5.0 innings of the game. Pacha allowed six hits and five runs while walking three and striking out seven. Sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) relieved Pacha from her duties and closed the game. In Vannicola's 1.0 innings in the circle, she did not allow any hits or runs.
The game remained knotted at zero until the top of the fourth when Jones singled up the middle and scored junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to give GU the 1-0 advantage. Shortly after, sophomore Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham) singled to left center and scored Jones, making the score 2-0.
The Bluejays tied the score in the bottom of the fourth off of a two-RBI home run. Creighton took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three more runs off of a pair of home runs.
Georgetown will host Seton Hall on Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6, at Nationals Youth Academy to close out the regular season with a three-game BIG EAST series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game scheduled for noon and then will close out the series, as well as the regular season, on Sunday for a single contest at noon.
