WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University track & field team traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia, for the UVA Quad Meet, taking on Virginia, Maryland and Bucknell on Friday afternoon. The team put up a number of strong times this early in the season, including an impressive five event wins.
"I feel both teams competed extremely well in less than ideal conditions," Assistant Track & Field Coach Brandon Bonsey said. "The wind had a huge impact on every event. Our three event winners -- Taylor Williams, Piper Donaghu and Jack Salisbury -- fought hard in those conditions and came out with great performances."
All-American Piper Donaghu (Portland, Ore./Grant) recorded a win in the women's 800-meter run, pushing through with a time of 2:09.80. Donaghu led from the beginning and ran an aggressive race, battling the wind down the backstretch.
The men's 800-meter run featured a podium sweep from the Hoyas with Jack Salisbury (Rumford, R.I./La Salle Academy) taking the win, clocking 1:52.95. Joshua Bell (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) and Charles Cooper (Montreal, Quebec/Lower Canada College) finished second and third, respectively, to complete the sweep.
In the women's 100-meter dash, Taylor Williams (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham/Clemson) managed an 11.70, a GU best for the graduate transfer, for the win.
Freshman Malika Houston (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington HS) recorded a personal best of 5.58m in the women's long jump to go along with her collegiate-best 14.42 in the 100-meter hurdles.
Lawrence Leake (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) fought hard for his runner-up finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles despite the high winds.
The women swept the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. The foursome of Jody-Ann Knight (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville), Williams, Cassidy Palmer (Bloomfield, Conn./Bloomfield) and Shannon Meisberger (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) put their names in the GU record books as they cracked the top 25 in program history with a winning time of 46.77.
"It was great to have a foursome to compete in the 4x100," Associate Head Coach Alton McKenzie said. "I thought Jody and Taylor got us off to a great start and Cassidy and Shannon kept their composure while still being aggressive. We also had a great response from Malika with a PR in the long jump after facing some adversity in the 100mH. Also good 100m openers for Taylor for the win and Jody for third."
GU also put together a winning foursome in the 4x400-meter relay in Knight, Meisberger, Donaghu and Olivia Arizin (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara).
The men's 4x400-meter foursome finished second and Rey Rivera's (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) anchor split of 48.31 was more impressive as he had just finished his 1,500-meter open run.
