WASHINGTON - Georgetown University baseball senior Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league offices on Monday. The award recognizes Swad's performances in GU's series win over Xavier this past weekend to open BIG EAST play.
Swad came on in relief twice over the weekend and earned the victory in both games as the Hoyas won a pair of games in walk-off, extra-inning fashion. In the second game of Friday's doubleheader, Swad game on in the seventh inning and fired 2.2 hitless innings as the Hoyas walked off with a 2-1 victory in 10 innings. He struck out three while combining with Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) for a one-hitter, GU's first since 2015. In Saturday's series finale, Swad came back on and battled through three innings, allowing one run on three hits with two more strikeouts. He picked up the win again as he pitched the ninth, 10th and 11th innings and the Hoyas earned their second-straight walk-off win, 5-4. Overall, Swad threw 40 pitches on Friday and 48 on Saturday.
This is Swad's first career pitcher of the week award, and the second time he has been honored in his career as he earned an honor roll selection in 2017 as a junior. It is the second BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week selection for Georgetown this season as Killam earned the recognition last month. This is the sixth weekly honor of the season for the Hoyas.
Georgetown will step out of conference play for its next five games, starting with a midweek road contest at Navy on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Annapolis, Maryland. The Hoyas will then have their BIG EAST bye week next weekend, April 13-15 and will play a split weekend against George Mason. Friday's and Saturday's games will be at Shirley Povich Field, while Sunday's contest will be played in Fairfax, Virginia.
