The Hoyas (25-28, 8-9 BIG EAST) enter the tournament after dropping a pair of games last weekend to Seton Hall, but earned a berth via a tiebreaker with Creighton after defeating the Bluejays twice earlier this season in Omaha, Nebraska. After starting the season 0-10, Georgetown has gone 25-18 the rest of the way to clinch the program's fourth-consecutive season 25-win season and the fifth in the past six years. The Hoyas won 18 of their final 26 contests, including winnings streaks of seven and eight games -- the latter of which was GU's longest since 2013.
On Monday, senior Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in the conference's final weekly awards of the season. Bernstein hit safely in all three games, batting .455 (5-for-11). He started the week with a three-hit, four-RBI performance out of the leadoff spot in an 11-6 win over UMBC, hitting two of Georgetown's seven doubles and tying a career high with four RBIs, including a sacrifice fly. Bernstein singled in each game of Saturday's doubleheader against Seton Hall, and was hit by a pitch in game one to reach base twice.
Bernstein was one of four Hoyas to be named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team earlier on Wednesday when the league's postseason awards were announced. He earned the nod at second base, while senior first baseman Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont), senior catcher and designated hitter Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and sophomore left-handed pitcher Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) all joined him on the second team. It was the first career All-BIG EAST selections for all four players and the four nods ties the program record set in 2015 and 2016.
For the season, Bernstein is tied with Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) for the team lead with a .313 batting average. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) and Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley), who are both batting over .300 as well, are tied with Bernstein with a GU-best 12 doubles. McCabe also has a team-high 36 RBIs, while Ryan M. Davis ranks second in the BIG EAST with 18 stolen bases. Bernauer is hitting .299 and leads the Hoyas with five home runs and four triples while ranking second with 31 RBIs. He also has 10 doubles on the year for a team-best .540 slugging percentage.
St. John's enters the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 36-14 overall record and won the BIG EAST regular season championship with a 15-3 conference record. The Red Storm, which owns a league-best .296 team batting average, is led by BIG EAST Player of the Year John Valente who leads the squad with a .363 batting average and 11 stolen bases, while tying for the team lead with 37 RBIs. Five other players are batting over .300 and Anthony Brocato is among the conference leaders with 10 home runs. The St. John's pitching staff ranks second in the country with a 2.66 team ERA and have struck out 435 batters while opponents are hitting just .215 against the Red Storm.
The winner of Thursday's game will play the winner of No. 2 Seton Hall and No. 3 Butler in a winner's bracket game on Friday evening. Thursday's two losing teams will play in an elimination game on Friday afternoon.
