May 7, 2018 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University baseball senior Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday. The award recognizes Bernauer's performances in GU's 4-0 week, including a three-game sweep of Villanova over the weekend, Georgetown's first BIG EAST series sweep since 2011.
Bernauer batted an astounding .643 (11-for-14) with 11 RBIs and a 1.143 slugging percentage out of the cleanup spot, registering multi-hit performances in all four contests. In a 12-5 midweek victory over Mount St. Mary's, he had a double and a triple and drove in five runs, tying his season high. He then singled in the first run of GU's game one victory during Friday's doubleheader before recording three hits in the nightcap, finishing a triple short of the cycle, and drove in five runs for the third time this season, and second in three games. He capped the weekend with another two hits in Saturday's 4-1 victory, helping seal the series sweep over Villanova. In the four games, Bernauer raised his season average 51 points to .291.
This is Bernauer's first career BIG EAST award, and the 10th weekly recognition for the Blue & Gray this season. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) were each named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on March 26 and April 9, respectively.
The Hoyas (21-24, 7-5 BIG EAST) have won six-straight games, and 10 consecutive at Shirley Povich Field. They will remain home to wrap up their six-game homestand with a doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, May 9. The teams will play two seven-inning games starting at 5 p.m. Live stats and a subscription-based video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
