Baseball Concludes Homestand With Wednesday Doubleheader

May 8, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team wraps up its six-game homestand with a doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday evening. The teams will play two seven-inning games starting at 5 p.m., with a small break in between games, at Shirley Povich Field. Live stats and a subscription-based video stream will be available at GUHoy-as.com.

The Hoyas (21-24, 7-5 BIG EAST) enter Wednesday's contests having won six-straight games overall, and 10 consecu-tive at Shirley Povich Field. Georgetown is coming off of a three-game sweep of Villanova over the weekend, the pro-gram's first BIG EAST series sweep since 2011. An eighth-inning RBI single by Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) gave the Hoyas an 8-7 victory in game one of Friday's doubleheader. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) had five RBIs and Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) did not allow a hit until the sixth inning as GU took the second game, 9-3. Four shutout innings from the bullpen and a three-hit performance by Sammy Stevens (Birming-ham, Mich./Brother Rice) clinched the sweep with a 4-1 victory on Saturday.

Bernauer was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after batting .643 (11-for-14) with 11 RBIs and a 1.143 slugging percentage in GU's four games last week, registering multi-hit performances in all four contests. In a 12-5 midweek victory over Mount St. Mary's, he had a double and a triple and drove in five runs, tying his season high. He then singled in the first run of GU's game one victory during Friday's doubleheader before recording three hits in the nightcap, finishing a triple short of the cycle, and drove in five runs for the third time this season, and second in three games. He capped the weekend with another two hits in Saturday's 4-1 victory. In the four games, Bernauer raised his season average 51 points to .291.

For the season, Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) leads the Hoyas with a .316 (54-for-171) batting av-erage and also has a team-high 11 doubles while ranking second with 24 RBIs. He is second in the BIG EAST with 17 stolen bases. Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) is right behind him with a .315 (34-for-108) average, while Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) is hitting .307 (51-for-166) and leads the squad with a career-high three home runs. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) has a team-leading 34 RBIs and is tied with Bernstein with 10 dou-bles.

Maryland Eastern Shore enters Wednesday's doubleheader with a 12-37 overall record and an 8-16 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Hawks are coming off of a three-game sweep over Delaware State and will next play in the MEAC Championship, May 16-19 in Daytona Beach, Florida. Dominic DeBlaise leads the team with a .310 batting average, while Jamison Trower has accounted for half of the squad's home runs with three. The Hawks are batting .236 as a team, while the pitching staff owns a 6.57 team ERA and opponents are batting .301 with 26 home runs.
