June 1, 2018 WASHINGTON - Georgetown track & field's Brandon Bonsey was named the Mid-Atlantic Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, as announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday. This is Bonsey's first coaching accolade from the organization.
"I am honored and humbled to be receiving this award," Bonsey said. "It means a lot to me that my peers within our region were the ones voting on this. Receiving recognition for the hard work we've put in as a team is always a good feeling. This award is certainly a testament to the caliber of athlete that I coach. I coach some really talented athletes who have come together and had a great season thus far. I'm excited for them to finish things off on a good note next week in Eugene."
Bonsey, who works with the men's middle distance and distance group, returned to his alma mater at the beginning of the 2012-13 season and was promoted to head coach of men's cross country prior to the 2016 campaign while continuing to serve as an assistant coach during the track & field season.
Four Hoyas from Bonsey's middle distance and distance group have advanced to the NCAA Track & Field Championships, held June 6-9, at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. All-American Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John's School) and Michael Crozier (Arlington, Va./Gonzaga) will compete in the men's 10,000-meter finals while All-American Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day) and Nick Wareham (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) have advanced to the semifinals of the men's 1,500-meter run.
Another stellar track season in the books saw the Hoyas garner a quintet of men's titles at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships with Bonsey's events accounting for three. Bartelsmeyer competed in the 800-meter run, earning the fifth-straight title for the Blue & Gray in the event. Bartelsmeyer went on to anchor the winning 4x800-meter relay and was named the Outstanding Male Track Performer of the Meet for his efforts. Nick Golebiowski (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud) managed his first BIG EAST event win as he claimed the 10,000-meter run at the league meet.
Georgetown travels to Eugene next week to close out the collegiate season at the NCAA Championships. Live results will be available on www.GUHoyas.com
