WASHINGTON – This summer, several current members of the Georgetown baseball team are playing around the country in various summer collegiate baseball leagues. Additionally, three former Hoyas are playing professionally for major league organizations.

Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), who started all 55 games at shortstop as a freshman in 2018, is playing for the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). He is leading the Westerners with a .365 (38-for-104) batting average in 29 games. He has three home runs, six doubles, a triple, 18 RBIs, 24 runs scored and is 9-of-12 in stolen bases.
Two rising juniors, Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) and Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy), are pitching in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Killam, who set the Georgetown single-season strikeout record with 97 this spring, is pitching for the Falmouth Commodores. In five appearances out of the bullpen, Killam has a 5.00 ERA in 9.0 innings pitched, recording 10 strikeouts.
Morreale is throwing for the Bourne Braves and has made a team-high 10 relief appearances. All but one of the outings have been scoreless, covering 13.1 innings and opponents are batting just .184 against him. He has allowed just nine hits and two earned runs, for a 1.35 ERA, while striking out 21. In his most recent outing, on July 15, Morreale retired seven of the eight batters he faced in 2.1 innings of relief, striking out four batters.
Three Hoyas - Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus), Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) - are all suiting up for the St. Cloud Rox in the Northwoods League. Cushing has made eight appearances on the mound with seven starts. In 41.2 innings, he is 2-1 with a meager 3.88 ERA and 37 strikeouts while allowing just 10 walks. He earned a selection to the Northwood's All-Star Game, which will be played on July 24.
Weisenberg has played 41 games and is hitting .279 (41-for-147) with four home runs, five doubles and two triples. His 23 RBIs ranks second on the team and he has scored 21 runs with five stolen bases. Davis has appeared in 40 games and is batting .267 (40-for-150) with a home run and a team-leading 14 doubles. He has 15 RBIs and has scored 19 runs while ranking second on the team with seven stolen bases.
Four current and future Hoyas are playing locally in the Cal Ripken League. Rising sophomores Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) and Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) are teammates on the Herndon Braves. Lamon has made six appearances on the mound with four starts and, in 20.1 innings pitched, is 1-2 with a 3.09 ERA with 25 strikeouts. Davis has appeared in 26 games, both behind the plate and as the designated hitter, and has recorded two home runs, three doubles, two triples and 11 RBIs.
Left-handed pitcher Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) is pitching for the Alexandria Aces in the Cal Ripken League. In six starts, covering 33.1 innings, he is 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA and 25 strikeouts. Georgetown incoming freshman Carter Bosch, who just graduated from the Potomac School, is also pitching for the Aces and has made six starts on the mound. In 30.0 innings, Bosch is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 32 strikeouts. He has allowed just 22 hits and 12 walks.
Rising junior Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central/La Salle Institute) is also with McCabe in the NECBL, pitching for the Newport Gulls. In nine appearances, including three starts, he owns a 4.94 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School), a rising junior, is playing for the Norcross (Ga.) Astros in the Sunbelt League for the second-consecutive summer. He is batting .242 (16-for-66) in 21 games with a double, five RBIs and eight walks. Voted the best defensive first baseman by the league's coaches, Achecar is currently partaking in the Southeast Collegiate Prospect Showcase as a member of the Sunbelt League All-Star Team.
Rising sophomore Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) is suiting up for the Marthas Vineyard Sharks in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL). In 17 games, he is batting .333 (18-for-54) with a home run, three doubles, 14 runs scored, seven RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
Will Salomon (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick), a rising junior, is playing for the Thundering Herd in the Hudson Valley Collegiate Baseball League. He is batting .345 (10-for-20) with a home run and three doubles in 12 games.
Simon Mathews (C'17), is in his second season pitching in the Los Angeles Angels organization. He started the year with the Angels' Class A affiliate, the Burlington Bees. In 10 games, with eight starts, Mathews was among the team leaders with a 2.04 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched. He earned a promotion to Advanced Class A, the Inland Empire 66ers, in early June. In seven appearances, with six starts, he has a 5.46 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 29.2 innings, compiling a 1-3 record with one save. Mathews has also made two appearances, one start, in Triple-A Salt Lake where he is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
David Ellingson (MSB'17), who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners following his junior year in 2016, returned to the Hilltop and completed his finance degree in December 2017. His 2018 season started back with the Everett AquaSox - Seattle's short season rookie team. In seven appearances out of the bullpen, he was 2-0 with one save, a 2.19 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12.1 innings. Ellingson earned a promotion to Advanced Class A Modesto where he made his first appearances on July 15, allowing a run and striking out three in 2.0 innings.
Matt Smith (B'16), who was drafted six picks ahead of Ellingson by the Milwaukee Brewers, missed the entire 2017 season because of injury. He is still listed on the disabled list as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
